Choosing a T'ai
Chi DVD
There are dozens of tai chi videos on the
market. Which one do you choose?
While not a great
dollar investment, you will be committing time and effort to learning.
You will want to get the most for your time and money.
Here are a few do's
and don'ts that may help with your decision.
DON'T...
DON'T
choose solely on price. Often the less expensive DVD's are not
designed as teaching videos, and are just "follow along". A $10 saving may
mean having no hope of learning, no future benefits and a HUGE amount of
frustration!
DON'T
buy any video where the instructor faces the camera. When the
instructor moves left, you must move right, he moves forward, you must move
backward. After about 3 movements, you become totally disoriented and
frustrated.
DON'T
purchase a DVD that teaches a lot of moves. Each movement is
intricate. If there are a lot of moves, then each move must be taught
superficially in order to fit onto one tape, and the essence is lost.
DON'T
assume that because a celebrity is teaching that the quality will be high.
Most celebrities are not t'ai chi professionals.
DON'T
be fooled by a pretty cover. Often the cover is beautiful, but the
majority of the tape is done in a dull studio.
DON'T
buy an online course without a DVD. Always be sure you have
a DVD or video so you own it permanently.
DO...
DO
read comments from actual users. They are people like you who have
tried the DVD and were excited enough to write back with comments
DO
check for a money back guarantee. No guarantee means no confidence
in the product. If the DVD is long, complex or difficult to follow, you have
no recourse.
DO
take the time to read through web site pages to get a sense of the
teacher and his/her skill level and dedication. Many sites are just one or
two pages designed to sell a product, offering nothing else of value.
DO look for
innovations designed to make learning easy. T'ai chi can be ever so
complex, but it doesn't have to be that way.
DO look for
DVD's that will be interesting to watch, and fun to learn. You may
as well enjoy the process!
DO call the
teacher with any questions you may have. There is nothing better
than talking to the person who created the tape. (If you are calling me,
please call after 9 Pacific.)
